Usually when things go wrong in recipes, they're my fault. It could be a unit conversion or misreading the directions of what to do, such as making soft peaks stiff. Sometimes it's Kris's fault, saying teaspoon instead of tablespoon. And sometimes, it's both of us: a lapse in communication could easily destroy any recipe.

That wasn't the case this time. I made the dough, and it was perfectly cookie-like. It made soft scoops with my ice cream scooper (my form of uniform measurement). Yet, something went wrong. After goofing off in the camera, I take a look to my left and what else is there other than an entire stack of smoke coming from the oven. Maybe there was something in there? So, I hurriedly go and open the oven to find that through the smoke (which I was rapidly inhaling, increasing my chances of lung cancer by a metric that only a 2-pack-a-day person would get) there is nothing. Other than the wisps of smoke, there is not a single thing inside. Not a pan, or a piece of meat left in there for weeks. Nothing. So I throw some water in it, in hopes that the smoke quickly turns to steam instead and I can clean the inside.

To say I cleaned the inside is an understatement. I took a paper towel, originally perfectly white and after one swipe in the bottom of this oven, I look at charcoal black gracing the surface. Ew. So I wipe some more and leave it for a day. Because apparently time heals all. The dough sat in the fridge overnight, quietly waiting for it's time in the spotlight. And then it sat another night because I wasn't able to bake the next day (lazy). In the end, after sitting for two days, hoping that ignoring the problem solved it, I turned on the oven to see my fate. No smoke. Baked the cookies. They're perfect.
